Weakness or Strength

Aug 24

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Take for example, the story of one 10 year old boy who decided to study Judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident. The boy began lessons with an old Japanese Judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training the master had taught him only one move.

“Sensei”, the boy finally said, “Shouldn’t I be learning more moves. This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the sensei replied. Not quite understanding but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success. the boy was now in his finals. This time his opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time out. He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened. “No” the sensei insisted, “let them continue.” Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake, he dropped his guard. Instantly the boy made his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was champion. On the way home the boy and sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.  “Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?” “You won for two reasons,” the sensi answered. “First you’ve almoste mastered one of the most difficult moves in Judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

The boy’s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.

In the beginning…..

Aug 22

It wasn’t until early 2006 I’ve had an epiphany. That was when I realized how my career in photography all started. I was about 8 or 9 years old and when one Christmas morning under the tree was laying a package with a camera in it for me. The camera was the Kodak instamatic. 1983.jpg  I can now remember vividly that I used to go around all over shooting images of everything and everyone. In my teen years I was entertained by sports and much more and then the desire for the camera stayed on the back burner as in my early 20’s is when I’ve decided to buy myself my first SLR (Canon EOS 5)which I still have. eos-5-oblique.jpg

I’ve followed a few courses and read every photography magazine I could’ve gotten my hands on. When I was comfortable enough I went out and did a few weddings, christenings and first holy communions with it.

Not really making a living from it, mainly doing it as a hobby and to offset the price of equipment I wanted to acquire. In Dec 1994 I’ve gotten a job at a very promising company which didn’t allow me much time to shoot anymore. One day while looking for something in my room I reached up where the SLR was in the bag and it fell from about 6 foot unto the ground and it got a crack in the body. I was so disappointed I just pushed it under the bed and never touched it until one day I was talking to a friend that shoots as well and he said that I should bring it to him let him test it out and see what is wrong with the camera. After his test he told me that it worked fine and nothing’s wrong with it. I’ve since then bought my first Digital Camera it was an Olympus C3040Z.

c3040z.jpg

It was a point and shoot rigged out with all the bells and whistles. A few weeks after acquiring this camera I’ve gotten a call from a friend that was to get married the same day and was to fly in a photographer to shoot her wedding but he never made the trip as his papers were not in order.  She told me the story and then asked me to do the wedding for her, I was a little reluctant as I haven’t done this in a few years and I know how important a wedding is so I didn’t want to take on this challenge and mess up. I’ve searched all day for a tog and with no luck so I’ve decided that I’ll do it for her but at her own risk and she said that it was fine. I did cover the entire wedding, 8 hours at least. While doing it though I’ve had that great feeling and my inner self was telling me “Look at you enjoying yourself, you should do this fulltime”. Less than a year after the wedding I was laid off my promising job I’ve acquired appropriate equipment and dove head first into photography.

Quote of the week

Aug 20

Success is to be measured not so much by the position one has reached in life, as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying  to succeed.

                                                                       Booker T. Washington

This quote is so much truth. When I read it it made me think of the begining stages of my business, not that I’m running a majored busines already. It has not even reached the tip of the iceberg. But it’s running with a pace now where the light at the end of the tunnel could be seen. We’re not there yet but getting there. Especially at the beginning, many had been the days that I’ve felt like throwing in the towel. I guess it happens to every business owner every so often. I wanted to give up and go back to the 9 to 5 but I stuck with it. Me at a 9 to 5 would make me most miserable. I’m not cutout for that. I’m highly ambitious. I must be constantly on the edge. After this photography business takes off to where I would want it to be I’ll be off to the other venture. I have a great deal of plans but photography is my love so I would never leave photography. I’ll pioneer other projects and leave it over to staff to run. OK, back on track. We tend to look at successful people and wish we are like them not knowing the many obstacles, hurdles, mountains and valleys they’ve had to cross to get where they are, not mentioning the time and effort that was invested in honing their skill, don’t forget, the sleepless nights. If you want to be succesful in life, be it on your job or in your own business you have to be able to overcome those obstacles, because obstacles will come!

Let those that have never sinned throw the first stone!

Aug 18

I’m never one to judge people and after seeing this clip on www.Youtube.com a few weeks ago it really made me think that we can all make mistakes. Many people label another once they’ve been in prison but I must say that prison is for everyone.  The best of us do things that can land us in prison, it’s just that we don’t get caught. Robbing a bank at gunpoint or taking a little bottle of correction fluid home from work is stealing. Be it because of anger, desperation or even a secret life that one would lead could land them in prison. After seeing this video it made me think that even in prison you have people with kind hearts, caring, respectful and worthy of respect.

Your environment or your situation does not and you should not allow it to define you.

The moral of the story is don’t judge people. Not because in a rage at work after being taunted by your colleagues, you throw a tool at one and it kills him does not make you a killer. You’re just a respectful person that had a situation take you over and it went sour.

Enjoy this! They must be good people to be able to do this.

Today it’s Shaydee!

Aug 17

As mentioned yesterday, today was Shaydee’s first day at a new school. It was really great for me to experience this. Normally men are too macho to go to these things and they come up with all sorts of excuses to not attend. I really try to attend events of my kids. I know they look for my support. I’m not perfect but I’m working on it. I did take a few shots with my point and shoot to blog. All the best to Shaydee this school year as she enters elementary school. Check her out all tricked out in her Hello Kitty gear.

Be Blessed,

First day of school for my boys

Aug 16

Today was the first day of school for my boys as you know by now or just if you don’t know. I have three kids. 1 girl and 2 boys. The girl being the first one to come out of the oven followed by the two boys. Their names are Shaydee (6), Naeem (5) and Ishaq (4). I woke up this morning early to take the boys to school a d to document this day as today was Ishaq’s first day at a new school. They were all excited as they got up this morning as they’re wearing new clothes, a new schoolbag, new sneakers. Shortly after getting to school we’ve learnt that Diego and Dora was present this is something we’ve tried just about a week ago and learnt that no matter how much we tell them that it’s a human being under the costume they are just terrified of them. If gotten a shot of Naeem with Cookie monster last week but today he was absolutely not in the mod for any pictures with these “hideous” characters. Ishaq was a bit reluctant to stay at school as he feared the characters but according to his teacher it was OK after a while. Following you have a few images of them. Tomorrow is Shaydee’s turn.

Blessings,

Bryan Morris

Naeem showing that he’s conquered the fear of these characters a few days ago, however today he did not want to get too close to them.

Quote

Aug 13

I read quite a bit and quotes are those things that are visited by me very often.

I always try and keep a positive mind frame so I visit and revisit quotes that would keep me in positive spirits. I’ll start with  quote section today on the blog so every Monday you can look forward to getting a different quote that would set off your week.

At times I might just place the quote and another time I might explain what the quote means to me. The quote from this week is from a great motivational speaker Jim Rohn.

www.jimrohn.com

“If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary”

This is exactly the situation I’m in right now. In order to put a stop to abuse, I’ve decided to launch out on my own and not have to depend on any local wedding planner to get me work. I’ve been in business struggling for 4 years with this business having to be the starving artist. I did learn from it though as that has caused me to have anywhere close to 200 weddings under my belt. There are quite a few business skills that came along with that also. I just couldn’t stand to know that they would charge a couple +/- $450 for photography but then want to pay me $200 for the shoot and they would stay with $250. To me that was just high day robbery. It took me 1 year+ to get me to this position. I had to really see how this was going to work and until recently I’ve decided to take the plunge. I no longer wanted to settle for the ordinary so I had to risk the unusual. So I’ve launched into full day coverage for high end clients.

Are you going to continue settling for the ordinary or are you going to risk the unusual.

Step out of your comfort zone and see that you can walk on water.

Ramphys Tromp

Aug 12

WoW!

This was my expression on Sunday at the end of a concert. at the Westin Aruba Resort & Casino. http://www.westinaruba.com

Ramphys Tromp is one of Aruba’s largest artist that on January, 2005 turned his life around. (Dedicate his life to Christ)

He then vowed that he will never sing until He feels it was right. And when he feels it’s right the only music he will be singing is Gospel Music.

He is a Latin Gospel artist that is promising. It was a pleasure for me to be present and that I could’ve shoot for fun.

Here are a few of the images captured on the night.

You can follow him at http://www.myspace.com/ramphystromp

Enjoy!
